Alpha Swimming Lessons

Alpha Lessons are KAL’s swimming lessons for swimmers who may need additional support during their swimming lessons and follow the Swim England Alpha Step awards and Learn to Swim Framework to allow swimmers to build confidence in a specialised environment.

They are particularly relevant for individuals with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) allowing swimmers to have fun, be safe in the water and learn to swim.

KAL offers progressive sessions from Alpha 1 (which require a parent or carer to be in the water with the swimmer) through to Alpha 4.

Alpha 1 rewards the development of the early stages of buoyancy, coordination, spatial awareness, breathing and entering and leaving the pool safely. The basic water skills and confidence gained through these elements enable a smooth transition to the Learn to Swim Framework covered in Alpha 2 to 4.

The basic water skills and confidence gained through these Awards enable a smooth transition to Learn to Swim Stage 1 Award, which is also included in Alpha 1.

The Alpha Step Awards reward the development of the early skills of:
1.Buoyancy
2.Coordination
3.Spatial Awareness
4.Aquatic Breathing
5.Rotation
6.Entering
7.Exiting the pool safely.

Each area has 3 progressive levels, which make up 22 elements of all 3 Steps.

The Alpha sessions are currently held at:

Colne Valley Leisure Centre – Tuesday
Huddersfield Leisure Centre – Saturday
Batley Sports and Tennis Centre – Saturday
