Why Choose KAL?

KAL deliver a national award-winning service to schools in Kirklees and the wider area, delivering school swimming lessons that achieve outcomes that are higher than the national average. KAL provide high quality facilities and a qualified, experienced workforce delivering an excellent service.

KAL will co-ordinate and manage all programming and transport arrangements where required and be available to meet with schools upon request.

Our core offer is the delivery of a 19-week programme with a minimum pool session of 50 minutes per week. Our delivery incorporates all the National Curriculum outcomes for swimming in a fun and safe environment.

KAL will collate and provide an annual statistics report for your school and newsletters to update schools on development and opportunities.

Every school choosing the KAL School Swimming Service will become a ‘KAL School Swimming Partner’ and also include registration to the Swim England School Swimming Charter.

Our Aim

Our aim is to provide a fun, safe and high-quality environment for all children to have the opportunity to learn to swim, be safe around water and have an active, enjoyable experience.  

KAL want to promote and create life-long participation in physical activity, inspire and encourage future generations and deliver a high-quality, high-achieving school swimming programme, working in partnership with local schools.

25/26 Term Dates

Term 1
Week commencing 01/09/25 (Lessons begin Tuesday 02/09/25) to week commencing 02/02/26 

Term 2
Week commencing 09/02/26 to week commencing 13/07/26

Booking 

KAL School Swimming booking’s will be available for schools between 1st September 2025 – 31st October 2025 for the academic year 26/27.

Schools will be required to complete a KAL School Swimming booking form and agree to the service level agreement before 31st October 2025 to guarantee being part of the KAL School Swimming service for 26/27.

Ratios 

The number of sessions allocated to each school is based on the number of pupils on roll on the Kirklees School Census which is sent to KAL by Kirklees Council. 

The pupil to teacher ratio is 12:1 Non swimmers & 20:1 for more advanced swimmers.

Each session has a capacity of 40 pupils, however some sessions at Batley Sports and Tennis Centre and Spen Valley Leisure Centre have a capacity of 60, this will be communicated with your school, if you need to bring more than 40 pupils.

Changing Facilities

All of the facilities used for the KAL School Swimming Service have suitable changing facilities. If there are children who require any special assistance or arrangements, please contact: schoolswimming.admin@kal.org.uk

Appropriate swimwear

KAL School Swimming Transport 

KAL School Swimming Service provide the transport when required for Kirklees Primary Schools. The cost of transport is included in the overall price above. 

KAL work in partnership with West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) who manage the transport provision for KAL.  

The transport provision, as with the number of sessions given, will be based on pupil numbers from the Kirklees School Census. KAL aim to send the programme to Schools by Summer Half term for the following Academic year.  

WYCA ensure each transport provider completes a thorough risk assessment which will be available to schools via Kirklees Business Solutions. 

Statistics process

KAL complete a Baseline Assessment at the beginning of the Term for each school, this gives the instructors a good understanding of the competency of the class. At the end of the Academic year, KAL will send to each school the number of pupils able to complete the Baseline Assessment in the first 2 weeks of Term, in addition to the number of pupils that are able to achieve the National Curriculum Outcomes. This will show the school the clear progress the children have made.
