Building a healthy relationship with exercise early on, is a great way of supporting your child’s development in becoming a healthy adult.

As part of the Junior Fitness membership, juniors are able to book one of the listed sessions per day via the KAL App. 

Please note that with a Junior Fitness membership, all sessions must be pre-booked into one of the set sessions. Juniors cannot attend sessions without a booking or attend at any time with another member.

Mandatory Requirements
A Junior Gym Orientation is mandatory before attending Junior Gym.
Both a Junior Gym Orientation and a Teen Strength Workshop are mandatory before attending Teen Gym.
Both these sessions can be booked via the app.

Junior Gym Sessions

Junior Gym (11-12 year olds)

Junior Gym enables juniors aged 11-12 years to exercise in a safe and controlled environment with support from our fully qualified fitness instructors. All of our instructors are specially trained to work with juniors and understand the muscle development of juniors to ensure all workouts are appropriate and safe.

In junior gym session, 11-12 year olds have access to:



  • cardiovascular machines

  • pin-selected weight machines


A junior gym orientation is mandatory before attending Junior Gym.


Teen Gym (13-15 year olds)

Teen Gym enables 13-15 years olds to exercise in a safe and controlled environment with support from our fully qualified fitness instructors. All of our instructors are specially trained to work with juniors and understand the muscle development of juniors to ensure all workouts are appropriate and safe.  

During teen gym sessions 13-15 year olds have access to:  



  • cardiovascular machines  

  • pin-selected machines  

  • plate loaded machines 

  • free weights (including racks, barbells, dumbbells) 


Both a junior gym orientation, and strength workshop attendance, is mandatory before attending Teen Gym.




Junior Gym Orientation 

The 30-minute orientation is mandatory for any junior aged 11+ wishing to attend either junior gym, teen gym or family gym. Juniors must attend the orientation with a parent or guardian*. 


If you are a Junior fitness member you need an orientation before you can use any KAL centre. This can be booked either via the app or at your local KAL centre. It will be called “Junior Fitness Orientation”.


During the orientation a qualified instructor will induct the junior into the gym environment by giving key information about the centre and gym area, provide knowledge and education on how to safely set up and use the equipment, and discuss other suitable activities for the junior based on their goals.  


Without a junior gym orientation you will not be able to access junior gym, teen gym or family gym


*An Adult refers to a responsible relative or guardian over the age of 16. 


Teen Strength Workshop 

The 30-minute strength workshop is available for 13-15 year olds, and is mandatory for any teen wishing to attend teen gym sessions  


The strength workshop will be delivered by instructors who are specifically trained to coach juniors. The workshop will improve the teens knowledge and understanding of strength exercises and technique, and how to safely set up and use free weights. 


Without both a junior gym orientation and teen strength workshop attendance, you will not be able to access teen gym


Family Fitness Classes

Family Gym

Family Gym is available for junior ages 11+. In these sessions the junior/teen and Parent or Guardian workout in the gym together.


Family Gym differs from Junior Gym and Teen Gym sessions as it is not instructed by a Fitness Instructor. The Parent or Guardian is responsible for supervising and supporting the junior/teen


A junior gym orientation is mandatory before attending Family Gym. Juniors /Teens must attend with an adult*.


*An Adult refers to a responsible relative or guardian over the age of 16. 


Family Circuit

A circuit where the junior and adult can workout together. Family Circuit is a 45-minute circuit style class. In the class customers will move through stations and complete exercises designed to educate and improve technique, improve confidence using the equipment, and increase fitness levels.




Family Rig 

A rig circuit where the junior and adult can workout together. This 30 minute gym-based class makes the most of our amazing rig’s. Similar to a traditional circuit class, customers will move through stations and complete exercises designed to educate and improve technique, improve confidence using functional equipment, and increase fitness levels.


Swimming Sessions

Public Swim

This is a lane-free pool session open to juniors where participants can swim lengths, widths or walk.




Junior SwimFit

Junior SwimFit offers an alternative water-based session for those who want to work on their health, fitness, endurance, strength and stamina.  


The 45-minute sessions are delivered by a qualified Level 2 swimming instructor and include a warmup, main activity and cool down as well as contrasting activities to improve overall fitness and swimming skills and add an element of fun and challenge. 


To attend Junior SwimFit, swimmers must be aged from 8 up to 16 years old and have achieved the Swim England Learn to Swim Stage 6 award or equivalent. It is recommended that non-KAL Swim members can swim a minimum of 100m continuously and are confidently able to swim at least three strokes.


Unlimited Swimming

As part of your child’s Junior Fitness membership, they will benefit from free public swimming across all of the swimming pools managed by KAL, including Mini Splash & Play (excluding the Splash Park at Huddersfield Leisure Centre).


Other

Athletics Track

Juniors aged 8 years and over can access the athletics tracks at Spen Valley Leisure Centre and Leeds Road Sports Complex. Juniors must be supervised by an adult*, and bookings can be made directly at either centre during the track’s opening hours.

How do I find out when sessions are available? 

Our timetable is available on Junior Fitness area of the website, and sessions are viewed and booked on the KAL app. For track availability, please check the KAL website. 


How old does a junior need to be to attend Junior Gym ?

Those aged 11-12 can attend junior gym, as long as they have had an orientation prior. 


How old does a junior need to be to attend Teen Gym?

Those aged 13-15 years old can attend teen gym, as long as they have had both a junior orientation and attended a strength workshop 


How old does a junior need to be to attend Family Gym ?

Juniors aged 11+ can attend family gym with a responsible adult. Juniors must have attended an orientation prior. 


Do I have to attend an Orientation with my child? 

For the completion of the health questionnaire and knowledge of how the sessions run, it is essential that a guardian, parent, or older siblingattends with the junior.


Can a parent / guardian bring two juniors with them to Family Gym? 

The ratio for family gym is 1 adult to 2 juniors. The adult is responsible for supervising the junior(s) 


Why is Family Gym a two hour slot?

To enable flexibility, family gym is a two hour slot to enable families to attend anytime within those two hours.  


What fitness classes can a junior customer attend?

Customers aged 11-15 can attend both junior and family fitness classes. These are delivered by qualified instructors who can adapt the exercises for that age group 


Can a junior/teen attend a Family Fitness class on their own?

Yes, 11-15 year olds may attend a Family class on their own, as they will be supervised by a qualified fitness instructor. Adults (parent/guardian) however, must attend with a junior/teen. 


Why are there no fitness classes or gym options for 8-10 year olds?

Due to the sizing limits of the gym equipment it is not safe for this age group to access and use our fitness suite. Our fitness and gym staff are only qualified to deliver and coach ages 11 upwards. Therefore, we are only able to offer swim/supervised track usage as part of 8-10 year olds membership access.


Is there a minimum height the junior must be to access the fitness suite/family cycle classes?

Yes, to ensure our junior customers can set up and use the equipment safely they must be a height of at least 4”9  


When can I book onto the sessions?

Sessions are bookable from 9pm, 8 days prior to the session.

Where possible we encourage you to book in advance. Cancellations do occur, we recommend checking the app frequently for a space. 


Why is there a capacity on the gym-based sessions?

To ensure we comply with health and safety, our gym-based sessions have a maximum capacity to ensure a safe environment for our junior customers, and to ensure they receive personalised support from our instructors throughout the session.
